%T An Analysis of Pluralism Perspectives in The Textbook When English Rings The Bell Class VII for Junior High School %D 2014 %I UNY %L UNY12026 %A Joko Triyatno %X The aim of this study is to describe pluralism perspective in the textbook When English Rings The Bell class VII of curriculum of 2013 by using structural semiotic. The description can be how the integration of pluralism is, what the variances of pluralism are, and what the meaning of pluralism perspective in the textbook is. This is a qualitative inferential content analysis study. This study is also known as a semantical content analysis by revealing the deep structure, latent meaning, and the signifying process through signs, codes, and binary oppositions. The data making technique of this research was done in three phases: 1) discerning the textbook and interpreting it into data through structural semiotic viewpoint, 2) making a reporton thematic distinction (ethnic group and gender) based on the conceptual basic, and 3) doing inferential analysis. The technique of data analysis of this research was done in three sessions which are as follows: 1) reduction of data by sorting the data to make it fit to the aim of the research and really needed, 2) validity and reliability, the valid data in this research is semantical validity, it is thedata which is sensitive to symbolic meaning obtained from “the classification of sign-vehicles” (Krippendorff, 1980: 158-162; 2004: 323-330), meanwhile reliability on data in this research is intra-rater and inter-rater, and 3) analytical technique, it is done by doing semantical interpretation by using structural semiotic towards pluralism aspects in written language speech community and pictures (photographs) or illustrations. The results of the study are as follows: 1) The existence of pluralism in the textbook is significant but too many syntacmatical data of the pluralism variances when they are observed through structural semiotic viewpoint, 2) the variances of pluralism in this textbook are ethnic group and gender, and 3) the pluralism in the textbook is uncontrolled. The uncontrolled situation is shown in some controversies: (a) controversy of figure of women, (b) controversy of figure of Beni’s, Udin’s, and Siti’s father and mother, (c) controversy of the concept of the main characters, (d) controversy of unclear situations, (e) controversy of using symbols and names, and (f) controversy of linguistic. Those controversies of the textbook raise arguments that the pluralism perspective in the textbook probably contributes to: (a) delirium, (b) virtual reality, (c) local minded, and (d) unstructured linguistic. %K content analysis, pluralism, textbook, and structural semiotic
