Abstract

This study aims at determining differences in the improvement of graphics drawing and interpreting abilities between students given with physic teaching treatments using guided experimental method and ones given with free experimental method of grade X of SMA Negeri 1 Gombong on the subject of geometrical optics. The research samples were determined by involving classes with a consideration that the students have similar physics initial knowledge. The experimental class 1 used free experimental method and the experimental class 2 used guided experimental method. This study was carried out to the students of grade X of SMA Negeri 1 Gombong on the subject of geometrical optics. The research method was experimental method. Data collection technique was done by giving pretests to gain students’ initial capabilities data. Later, the students were given with treatments using free and guided experimental method and then given with posttests to gain data of graphic drawing and interpreting abilities analyzed with Standard and Absolute Gain. The research results showed that (1) there was no significant difference in the improvement of graphic drawing ability between the students given with treatments using free experimental method and ones given with guided experimental method. The drawing ability analyzed with the absolute gain resulted tcount = 1.749 < ttable 0.05 = 1.991 and the t value of the standard gain resulted tcount = 1.129 <table 0.05 = 1.991; (2) the graphic interpreting ability of the students given with treatments of free experimental method further increased than ones given with a treatment of guided experimental method (t of the absolute gain, tcount = 3.579 > ttable 0.05 = 1.991 and t of standard gain, tcount = 3.601 > ttable 0.05 = 1.991) Keywords : free experimental method, guided experimental method, graphic drawing ability, graphic interpreting ability Year : 2010
