Abstract

This research aims at studying the influence of the PEG400 addition in Polyurethane synthesis of CPO and TDI, Polyurethane mechanical properties of hardness, thermal properties of Polyurethane in the form of the glass transition temperature (Tg), as well as determining the presence of cross linking through a test of the degree of swelling. The synthesis of Polyurethane was performed by varying the composition of PEG400. Furthermore, CPO was reacted with TDI and PEG400 to form Polyurethane with composition variations of CPO: PEG400: TDI of (2: 0: 3), (2: 1: 3), and (2: 2: 3) (in grams). Polymerization was carried out at a room temperature, i.e. at temperatures of 27-28 (°C) for 3 minutes, and then continued the process of curing at the temperature of 120°C for 6 hours. Characterization of the synthesized Polyurethane included: (1) a functional group analysis by FTIR, (2) the analysis of mechanical properties through the hardness test using Shore A. Durometer, (3) a thermal analysis by DTA technique, (4) a cross linking determination through a test of the degree of swelling Results of the characterization by FTIR of the synthesized Polyurethane from TDI-CPO and CPO-TDI-PEG400 showed characteristic absorptions for Polyurethane. The effects of the addition of PEG400 on the synthesized Polyurethane indicated that PEG400 could fix the fragility of Polyurethane. The hardness test results indicated that the addition of PEG400 could reduce the level of hardness in Polyurethane. Polyurethane’s hardness was supported by Old existence in the cross linking, so that, the smaller the level of the hardness of Polyurethane, the less the cross linking. Thus, there was a decline in the amount of the cross linking with increasing concentration of PEG400. DTA thermo gram analysis showed that the addition of PEG400 could lower Tg of Polyurethane.
