Abstract

This study aims at improving the biology teaching process on the subject of factors influencing plants’ growth and development to improve the affective and cognitive abilities indicated by the development of the science process skills of the students of class VIII-D of SMP Negeri 4 Depok, Babarsari, Yogyakarta. The research design was classroom action research. The research subject was 27 students of class VIII-D of SMP Negeri 4 Depok located in Babarsari, Yogyakarta. This study consisted of 1 cycle. Cycle 1 used the subject of factors influencing plants’ growth and development. The affective data were gained by A1 (receiving), A2 (responding), A3 (valuing), A4 (organizing), and A5 (characterizing). The cognitive data were gained trough a pretest and a posttest while science process skills were gained through observations of the teaching process and working sheets. All data were analyzed descriptively by percentage. The research results showed that the affective and cognitive abilities through the development of the science process skills could improve the biology teaching process. The improvement of the biology teaching process was indicated by the development of students’ science process skills. The science process skills developed were identifying problems, formulating problems, using tools and materials, experimenting, observing, measuring, and concluding. Keywords : affective abilities, cognitive abilities, science process skills, factors influencing plants’ growth and development.
