Abstract

This research was action research aiming at improving science process skills using Salingtemas approach, as well as pursuing the mastery of concepts improvement. Classroom action research method was done in two teaching cycles that included planning, implementation, observation, and reflection in each cycle. Data collection of science process skills was begun by analyzing the emergence of the 14 aspects of science process skills including observing (watching), recording data, measuring, classifying data, creating tables, creating graphs, finding the relationship between space and time, planning studies/experiments, controlling variables, interpreting the data, setting tentative conclusions, making predictions, applying and communicating the results of what was done by using observations on the report of students’ activities completed with observations during the discussions and presentations. Students’ concept mastery was observed using a posttest in each cycle. Validation of instruments used face validity. Data analysis of science process skills used percentage techniques while the concept mastery was analyzed using the effect size. The results of the two teaching cycles showed the enhancement of the percentage in all aspects of science process skills observed from cycle I to cycle II and the increasing of the concept mastery with the effect size of 0.26 so it was included in the moderate category. Salingtemas approach could improve science process skills and the concept mastery of the students of class VII A of SMP N 5 Banguntapan, Bantul on the subject matter of environmental damages in the level of moderate category.
