Abstract

LEVELS OF THE COMPTENCY IN MAKING CHILDREN’S CLOTHING PATTERNS USING THE DIRECT INSTRUCTION MODEL ASSISTED BY MACROMEDIA FLASH MEDIA AT SMK YPE SAWUNGGALIH KUTOARJO Juni lrawati NIM 10513249003 ABSTRACT This study aims to investigate: 1) the implementation of the direct instruction model assisted by macromedia flash media in the pattern making subject at SMK Sawunggalih Kutoarjo, 2) the improvement of the students’ competency in making children’s clothing patterns through the direct instruction model assisted by macromedia flash media in the pattern making subject, and 3) their opinions of the direct instruction model assisted by macromedia flash media. This was a classroom action research study employing the research model by Kemmis and McTaggart. The research subjects were students of Grade X of Boutique Clothing at SMK YPE Sawunggalih Kutoarjo with a total of 25 students. The data were collected through: (1) an observation sheet, (2) a performance assessment, (3) a posttest, and (4) a questionnaire. The validity of the observation sheet, questionnaire, and posttest instruments was assessed by the construct validity through expert judgment involving two experts and the reliability by the Cronbach’s Alpha. The data were analyzed by the descriptive technique. The results of the study were as follows. 1) Based on the observation results through the observation sheet, there was an improvement in the learning implementation by 16.00; in Cycle I the mean was 69%, indicating that learning was well implemented, and in Cycle II the mean was 86%, indicating that learning was very well implemented. 2) Regarding the attainment of the competency in making children’s clothing patterns through the direct instruction assisted by macromedia flash media at SMK YPE Sawunggalih Kutoarjo, there was an improvement in each cycle; in the pre-cycle, of 25 students, 14 students (56%) attained the Minimum Mastery Criterion (MMC), in Cycle I the competency improved to 88%, and in Cycle II it improved to 100%. The improvement from the pre-cycle to Cycle II was 44%. 3) The students were very happy with the direct instruction assisted by macromedia flash media; the results indicated that 92% (23 students) were very happy and 8% (2 students) were happy.
